Cannot see Security (Permissions) tab in Windows XP. Security Tab Does not appear in Folder Properties

If you have a machine still running Windows XP you may be missing the Security Tab when you view the folder properties. This could be for a number of reasons:

  • The drive is in FAT32 instead of NTFS
  • You are running Windows XP Home (it does not feature advanced file sharing with the security tab)
  • Advanced File Sharing is not enabled on Windows XP Professional – this we can fix.

If you are running XP Pro and your drive is formatted in NTFS then go into Windows Explorer.

Go to the Tools menu -> Folder Options and then to the View Tab.Simple File Sharing on XP

Scroll to the bottom and uncheck “Use simple file sharing (Recommended)”. Then Press OK.

Now you get the Security tab when you right-click and go to properties on a folder.
